Wichita State’s women’s golf team shot the fifth-best round of the day Wednesday at the American Conference Championship, but it wasn’t enough to make a major push for a top-half finish after the final 18 holes.
The Shockers, who placed top-five in seven of the nine regular season tournaments this year, eventually finished in eighth place in a field of 11 teams with a total score of 34 over-par (898 strokes) as a team.
Tulsa repeated as team champions, beating Wichita State by 32 total strokes for a plus-2 result. The Golden Hurricane also bested second-place Charlotte by four strokes after three rounds of play from Monday through Wednesday at the Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Fla.
Individually, freshman Magdalena Domine placed the highest for the Shockers throughout the tournament. She shot rounds of 75, 74 and 72 to finish plus-5 for the tournament and tie for 12th place.
Domine, a Rio Cuarto, Argentina native, boosted herself up 11 positions after an even-par, 72 in the final round, which included four birdies in her first nine holes.
Senior Mackenzie Wilson finished in a tie for 18th place, but slipped two positions after taking an eight on a par five in her second-to-last hole of the tournament. Rounds of 73, 75 and 75 resulted in her placement on the leaderboard.
Senior Kate Tilma and sophomore Kayla Van de Ven also finished in the top 35, individually. Tilma finished in 28th place with a score of plus-10, and Van de Ven landed in 35th after finishing 12 strokes over par.
Junior Manon Guille began the tournament for Wichita State, but was substituted after the first two rounds. Senior Brooklyn Benn eventually finished the tournament in Guille’s place.
