The Wichita State men’s golf team didn’t take last place at the American Conference Championship, but it didn’t finish in first either.
After three rounds from Monday through Wednesday at the Ritz Carlton Members Club in Sarasota, Fla., the Shockers finished in 10th out of 11 teams with 877 total strokes (13-over-par).
No. 22-ranked Charlotte ran away with the tournament, shooting a minus-22 as a team in the final round to take home the trophy with 816 total strokes. The five 49er golfers combined for just nine bogeys or worse throughout the last 18 holes.
The Shockers shot their best round on the first day of the tournament, finishing with 290 total strokes (2-over-par) to slot into eighth place. They remained stagnant in eighth after shooting a 295 in Tuesday’s second round.
Wichita State then stumbled and fell two places in Wednesday’s final round with a 292 (4-over-par), while Florida Atlantic and Texas-San Antonio each notched under-par finishes to improve their overall score and leapfrog the Shockers.
Jose Miguel Ramirez finished his collegiate career on a high note, however, notching a tie for 25th place on the individual leaderboard. Ramirez’s rounds of 71, 73 and 73 resulted in a 1-over-par finish.
Emilio Arellano and Jose Carletta were Wichita State’s next-best individuals, finishing in a tie for 32nd place overall at 3-over-par.
Caden Cox finished in a tie for 45th place with 227 total strokes, good for 11-over-par. Michael Robson started the tournament for the Shockers, but Rhett O’Rear substituted for him before the second round and finished the tournament.
