An expansion of Wichita State’s community garden was proposed at the first Student Senate meeting of the 69th session on Wednesday.
Sen. Josh Mallard wrote the legislation, which would utilize the existing garden beds outside of Wallace Hall to house more plants for the community garden. The beds near Wallace have pre-existing sprinklers, which would help reduce the cost of the addition, according to Mallard.
The legislation is a resolution, which is only a formal recommendation from the senate. University leadership would need to consent to expand the community garden to that space.
Mallard said that the project would initially cost nothing because of the existing garden beds and sprinklers, but future maintenance and seed supply would come from the community garden’s budget.
The garden’s budget is part of the president’s budget, which has not yet been presented by Student Body President Jayden Island for the 69th session that began April 23.
The senate is scheduled to debate and vote on the resolution at its next meeting, on May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center, room 233. All senate meetings are live streamed on SGA’s YouTube channel.
