Wichita State has discontinued its NCAA men’s and women’s golf programs, effective immediately, according to an announcement from Athletic Director Kevin Saal Tuesday afternoon.
“It reflects careful consideration of our responsibility to steward resources in a way that ensures long-term sustainability of Shocker Athletics amid an increasingly complex and costly collegiate athletics landscape,” Saal wrote in the announcement.
The increasing costs of collegiate athletics have already taken their effect this year, as Wichita State cut five positions from its athletic department in January — including assistant coaching positions on the men’s and women’s golf teams.
Saal wrote in the announcement that “staff are working individually with each affected student athlete to provide academic, athletic and personal support.”
He also explained that those “who choose to remain at Wichita State will continue to receive their existing financial assistance, subject to applicable NCAA and university eligibility standards.”
The men’s golf team consists of eight players and a head coach, while the women’s roster consists of nine players and a head coach, making up 19 total members across the teams.
Of the 19, 10 players still have remaining playing eligibility.
Wichita State has had a men’s golf program since 1935 and a women’s golf program since 1974, which have combined for 26 conference titles and 25 NCAA Tournament appearances.
