Marissa’s Melodies: Ra Ra Riot continues to impress with latest album
With February coming to an end, the hopes of better music releases come with the beginning of March. Although the month overall was fairly slow, there were many enjoyable albums released this week, which made it hard to pick the best. The end of the month also calls for the Throwback Thursday album, which goes to “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac.
“Painting With” by Animal Collective
Released: Feb. 19
Genre: Alternative
The highly unusual Animal Collective has released yet another odd, yet compelling, album. “FloriDada” starts the album off with an upbeat, echoing and rhythmic tune that is energetic. “Hocus Pocus” and “Golden Gal” both start with random voice recordings, like “on the freeway today there are no dinosaurs to worry about (“Hocus Pocus”). It also has synth effects that make it seem like the laser gun in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is constantly going off. Although this album will most likely be too peculiar for most, those who enjoy new and strange things will definitely want to check it out.

“Need Your Light” by Ra Ra Riot
Released: Feb. 19
Genre: Indie Rock
Ra Ra Riot has been on the indie scene for nine years and is easily one of the best-known alt bands out there. From creating their own unique indie vibe, to following in the footsteps of ‘80s bands like Journey (which can be heard on “Call Me Out”), Ra Ra Riot continues to be one of the best alt bands with their latest album. “Absolutely” is a classic, fun, pop-y track that needs to be played on a road trip with the windows down, or it belongs on a car commercial like a Matt & Kim song. In the cymbal-heavy title track “I Need Your Light,” the rawness of Wesley Miles’s vocals resonates in the chorus. Over the 10 tracks, the album is a continuous, energetic and exciting record.

“Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac
Released: Feb. 4, 1977
Genre: Rock
Forming in 1967 and still creating and touring today, Fleetwood Mac is one of the most famous classic rock bands to date. In an album chalked up with hits, “Rumours” may be one of the best records ever created. From the running base in “The Chain” to the up-beat anthem “Don’t Stop,” Fleetwood Mac created an album that was ahead of its time. “Go Your Own Way” is easily one of the best-known songs. Over the course of 11 tracks, all ages will fall in love with the classics. Without the progressive music of Fleetwood Mac, many artists and bands today may not exist. Download: “The Chain”
