Courtney’s Corner: Maroon 5 needed some ‘Sugar’

The year was 1994.

It was a time before spinning, red chairs and bickering between Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. Levine was still in high school. It was this year that he and three buddies, Jesse Carmichael and Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick formed the band, Kara’s Flowers.

Kara’s Flowers had some ups and downs, including a record deal, then no record deal because it feel apart and the boys went to college. But in 2001 they regrouped with James Valentine and formed what we all know today as “Maroon 5.”

Maroon 5 recently came out with a new song, “Sugar,” in January, which is still on the Billboard Hot 100 and has more than 300 million views on YouTube.

The music video contains Levine crashing weddings across Los Angeles. He just comes in the back way and sets up a tent and surprises everyone in the wedding party.

But Entertainment Tonight reveals that the grooms did know about Maroon 5’s crasher plans.

“Only the grooms knew in each case,” a rep for Maroon 5 told ET. “However they disclosed it to their bride and wedding party, we’re not sure, but they all wanted it to be equally a surprise as we did. They had stages set up for their actual wedding band already. All we did was some simple continuity changes to match each one as best we could.”

The video was done by a professional at crashing wedding, the director of “Wedding Crashers” himself, David Dobkin.

The video is very well done and catchy — something Maroon 5 needed.

Maroon 5 has hits, but has been in a bit of a slump before “Sugar.”

It had “Maps” which was released last year. But other than that, there has been barely a blimp on the Maroon 5 radar that compares to the success of “Sugar.”

The Inquistir reported “Sugar” is “more popular than ever as they come of age after 21 years.”

Levine also made news this month when a crazy fan tried to give him some sugar on stage at the Today Show.

He said he wasn’t aware of her until she almost knocked him over.

Whatever happens, Levine will be known for “Sugar” this year, that is for sure.
