Courtney’s Corner: Best of the Best — It’s Grammy time

Sparkly dresses. Crazy performances. Beyoncé. It’s finally here: Grammy season.

And the album of the year race is on like Donkey Kong.

In honor of the Grammys, we are going to break down the best of the best, which album you should buy, and which albums you will most likely watch lose this year.

All artists for album of the year this year are all unique and special in their own way.

‘In the Lonely Hour’ by newcomer Sam Smith

Currently nominated for six Grammys, Smith is gaining momentum ever since dropping his first album in May. His only slightly gospel song, “Stay with me” was instantly played on pop radio shortly after its release and continues to be heard here in Wichita on Channel 96.3. His songs tell stories and are great to relax to.

‘Girl’ by Pharrell

The album that spawned the super hit “Happy” came from this album last year. Pharrell has a huge résumé with seven Grammy nominations in the past. He is no stranger to award shows. “Girl” is an OK album, but his songs make for better ringtones than space on my iPhone.

‘X’ by Ed Sheeran

We talked about him in last week’s album review. He came out with his latest album in July, which shot to No. 1 and had songs featured in the blockbuster hit “The Fault in Our Stars.” His album is quite relaxing with several hit ballads such as “Tenerife Sea” and “Shirtsleeves.” His first song on the album, called “Sing,” also features Pharrell. This album is worth buying. I have more than one copy.

‘Beyoncé’ by Beyoncé

Without any warning Beyoncé dropped an album on iTunes with matching music videos for purchase. She didn’t say a word and it shot to No. 1 with 617,000 copies in the first three days.

The album is OK, but I will spend money on Beyoncé tickets before I buy her album.

 Morning Phase by Beck

Bek David Campbell came onto the scene in the late 90s and was a hot commodity in the early 2000s then kind of fell off the face of the Earth. Last February he came back with a new album called “Morning Phase.” This album will not win and left me bored while listenig to it on YouTube.

My prediction: the coveted album of the year will go to either Smith or Sheeran. They sold the most albums.

With the economical woes going on right now in our economy, artists must be different in order to get attention of an over-stimulated millennial generation. Each of Smith’s and Sheeran’s albums are incomparable to anything else, and that is why they will be the big winners at 7 p.m. Sunday night on CBS.
