Keep a lighter buzz with these diet-friendly alcoholic drinks

Since I always look for healthier options, why not keep it consistent on the weekends?

I try to treat myself every once in a while. Every person is different, though, and may have different philosophies toward those infamous cheats. Some people prefer to eat their extra calories. Others prefer to drink them.

Disclaimer: too much alcohol in the body can be extremely harmful, so drink at your own risk and in moderation.  The term “healthy” is subjective, at least until you down four of these drinks, and then you’re past what is considered “healthy” to the average person. In simpler terms: the fewer the drinks, the fewer the calories.

But, there may be some hidden benefits to some of these drinks, and perhaps you won’t feel so guilty when out with friends.

So if you’re a “cheat drink” kind of person, here are a few alcoholic beverages that won’t completely ruin your diet, but might still allow you to cut loose on a Saturday night without worrying too much about the calories.

Vodka soda

If you’re going off calories alone, this is your drink. Vodka averages fairly low calories, and since soda water has zero, this is a dieter’s go-to during a night on the town.

An added bonus: clear liquor — like vodka and gin — are less likely to cause any morning hangovers versus darker alcohol such as whiskey or brandy, the Huffington Post reports.

Red wine

Pass the lighter-colored wines — sad, I know — because of the high sugar content. Some health experts consider red wine heart-healthy, according to the Mayo Clinic. Antioxidants found in the sweet drink — called “resveratrol” — have been known to increase levels of the “good” cholesterol, protecting against artery damage and preventing heart disease.

What’s more, a small glass of red wine has about 75 calories (depending on levels of sweetness), according to Woman’s Magazine UK.

Champagne

The bubbly has many of the same benefits as red wine, PopSugar claims, because it’s made from both red and white grapes, but may come in less calories. Some researchers are comparing sparkling wine to cocoa beans because they share the same stress- and heart-disease-reducing antioxidants. I would argue, though, that a glass of champagne is much more fun than a mug of hot chocolate.

Mix and match a variety of fruit drinks and other ingredients with champagne for tasty champagne cocktails.

Bloody Mary

Dieters call this the “ultimate cocktail” for a health nut. It’s filling yet still low-cal, at only 90 calories a serving, according to Woman Magazine UK. The savory drink packs a ton of nutrients into one glass — tomato juice, horseradish, celery and Worcestershire sauce. That’s got to be the healthiest of them all.

Guinness

Remember those old-timey Guinness ads? “Guinness is good for you”? Well, maybe not quite. But studies from the University of Wisconsin have proved that drinking a glass of the dark stuff may work just as well as low dose aspirin to prevent heart clots that raise the risk of heart attacks, BBC News reported.

Sangria

This one isn’t necessarily low-calorie, but it can be made in several healthier versions — and there are several. Stick with the ones that have more fruit and less sugar, says Gizmodo, such as oranges, apples, raspberries, strawberries, lemon and lime.

A plus: you can hardly go wrong with red wine, gin and/or triple sec.
