Revisiting the WSU conference jump
Switching conferences was all the rage two years ago — it seemed the NCAA’s collective head was left spinning after every conference landscape change.
The Missouri Valley Conference took a huge hit when Creighton jumped ship. The MVC tried to recover by adding Loyola, but acting like Loyola can replace the strength of Creighton is laughable.
Wichita State completely ran the tables last season and with how weak the rest of the MVC is, we are expected to do it again. One slip and all credibility with our scheduling will go under fire.
WSU should consider leaving the MVC despite geographic or monetary issues. Going to a conference such as the Atlantic 10 would increase our strength of schedule and still give us a couple Midwest opponents like Dayton and St. Louis.
The Shockers would be playing the likes of Davidson, Dayton, George Mason, UMass, Richmond, St. Joseph’s, St. Louis and VCU.
Wichita State has a history of playing these teams already. During the WSU Final Four run, the team played VCU early and La Salle in the Elite 8. WSU played Davidson and St. Louis last season and has a matchup scheduled with the Billikens again this season.
A great rapport with the Atlantic 10 could turn into a long-lasting partnership for WSU as long as they listen to some sense and make the jump.
Fans have been calling for stronger competition — matchups with the Atlantic 10 could be just what the doctor ordered.
We all want to see WSU on ESPN, we all want to host college game day here, and the way to do that is through the Atlantic 10 — not Missouri Valley.
