WSU women’s golf opens play on Monday

The Wichita State women’s golf team (ranked 146) will be teeing off the season Monday and Tuesday at the Chip-N-Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. The starting time has yet to be announced.

The Shocker women finished their last regular season with back-to-back first-place rankings. Seven golfers will return to the roster of eight. They include senior Alejandra Arellano, juniors Bryce Schroeder, Meghan Schuetz, Madison Murphy and Dani Rugeles Duran and sophomores Samantha Stewart and Maria Alejandra Villalobos. Freshman Taryn Torgerson, from Buhler, Kan., joins the team as the lone rookie.

Last year, the team took third place at the Chip-N-Club Invitational, where 13 teams attended.

Tom McCurdy is leading the team into his eighth year as head coach. McCurdy was awarded the Missouri Valley Conference Coach-of-the-Year honor last year after his team won their first-ever MVC championship and the first championship the team has taken since 1992.

Arellano, along with Schuetz and Schroeder earned all-conference honors. Schuetz was also honored as the Elite 18 winner, first team all-Valley Scholar-Athlete and established the school record of 216 strokes in 54 holes at the Missouri State University/Payne Stewart Memorial meet.

Arellano finished the season last year leading the team with a 77.14 stroke average, finishing top 10 three times and top 20 six times. Per player average for the team last year was 77.2 strokes.

With their first-place title at the MVC Championship tournament, the team progressed to the NCAA Stillwater, Oklahoma Regional Championship tournament and finished in twenty-second place.
