Shockers do the incredible

If you would have told me when I made the decision to attend Wichita State that I would witness the men’s basketball team enjoying an undefeated season while I was a student, I might have laughed in your face.

Granted, I knew the team was good — just a year before I came to the university, the team won the NIT Championship. I just didn’t think it would be possible for them to have a perfect season.

The team went to the Final Four last spring and then started winning game after game after game this season and my view started to change. I started seeing an undefeated season in the future.

The only time I ever worried about the team losing is when they first played Missouri State and were trailing by 20 points before coming back and eventually beating the Bears.

After the Shockers defeated the Bears again on Saturday, history was made. The team successfully won its 31st straight win and ended the regular season undefeated.

What’s more incredible about the team is the last game they lost was in a Final Four game. I know I’ve said it before, but how many colleges can say their basketball teams is undefeated and last lost a game in a Final Four NCAA game?

Congratulations to the team and to head coach Gregg Marshal on a successful regular season. I anticipate the postseason for the Shockers to be just as strong.

As Marshall said in his interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe after the game Saturday, he’s going to ask the team if they are satisfied and, “I know they are going to say they aren’t satisfied yet.” While they may not be completely satisified, I think Wichita and WSU are. Of course, we would all like to see them go on and keep winning in the postseason.

No matter what happens this month and early next month with March Madness, I know everyone in Wichita will be proud of the team. Every WSU student will be proud, too. I do think the team can win the championship. We’ll just have to wait and see.
