Freedom of religion no excuse for discrimination

Freedom of religion can allow people to be exempt from vaccinations, break school dress codes or even avoid military service in the case of a draft. Soon, you may be able to add “discriminate against same-sex couples” to that list.

Thanks to a bill approved by the Kansas House Tuesday, freedom of religion may give private and government employees the right to refuse service to same-sex couples in the future.

If passed, this bill would essentially allow individual government employees to refuse State services on the basis of sexual orientation and their beliefs about same-sex marriage.

As a Christian myself, I see this bill as a violation of not only American principles, but Christian principles as well. I know the “what would Jesus do?” saying is often over-played and cliché, but I believe it is appropriate in this situation.

To me, it’s clear that Jesus would have voted against this bill for the sake of all humans, homosexual or not.

A bill that discriminates against others in the name of religion is a dark blemish to the ideals and principles of the religion it claims to defend.
