Get a DVR, attend this homecoming
I get it. Some days, there is nothing more I would like to do than go home after class, jump into my “forever lazy” pajamas and watch MTV’s Teen Mom 2 after a long day.
If you’re a pop culture/reality show junkie like me, there are a lot of things out there vying for your attention. I know I’m not alone in this because fellow classmates and friends, I read your Tweets and posts about your TV habits.
It would be easy to run home after class and not go to homecoming. I’ve done it. You’ve probably done it. But on-campus activities are awesome and we should start paying attention if you’re not already.
Recently, I’ve realized that college isn’t going to last forever and that attending extra activities are important to my academic experience.
In high school, I admittedly spread myself too thin most of the time. So when I got to college, I found it intimidating when I would see an activity because I didn’t want to commit myself to so many activities again. But I have realized that just because you go to something, doesn’t mean you are signing up for it; it means you are supporting your classmates in their activities.
It would be easy for me to also use the excuse that I live too far away to attend homecoming. I live approximately 30 minutes off campus in west Wichita. But this year, I am making it a priority.
Someday, when I talk about my college experience, I want to be able to say that I went to homecoming and I did not run home to catch Grey’s Anatomy, The Bachelor and Law and Order: SVU. DVR allows me to watch it next weekend anyway.
Also, studies have shown that being on campus more often gets you thinking about your classes, helping you get better grades. I know this because when I did it, my GPA turned around.
So fellow classmates, check out the events for Homecoming 2014. I guarantee if you do, it will be better than watching Meredith Grey not save a life with 15 minutes of commercials.
