Shockers sweep UMKC, Creighton in Kansas City
WSU women’s tennis spent the icy Saturday in Kansas City heating up the tennis courts. Their first match of the day was against former Missouri Valley rival Creighton.
Singles matches were played first, and that was all the Shockers needed to put away Creighton as they won 5-0.
Rebecca Pedrazzi started the match with a hard fought win 7-6, 6-4 over Jennie Hartjes. Next, Julia Schiller made quick work of Analese Snyder winning 6-1, 6-2.
Veronika Blaskova (6-0, 6-1), Abby Stevens (6-0, 6-1), and Montse Blasco-Fernandez (6-1, 6-0) all went on to win their matches handily to clinch a 5-0 win. There was no doubles play against Creighton since the Shockers won all their singles matches.
The match against host school UMKC started with doubles play. The duo of Blaskova/Lucia Kovalova started doubles play with a 6-2 win. Blasco-Fernandez/Pedrazzi followed suit by winning 6-0 to clinch the doubles point.
“It was strong competition,” Pedrazzi said. “We are a close team, and we are practicing hard. Playing two different teams in the same day isn’t easy.”
Singles play was much of the same from the Shockers as they went on to win the next three match points for another sweep, this time to the tune of 4-0.
Schiller won 6-1, 6-1, Kovalova 6-2, 6-4 and Blaskova 6-2, 6-0.
“In both of my single matches, I played aggressive,” Schiller said. “I was able to serve, return and move really well. All in all, it was a strong performance from the team, everyone played well, and we are ready for the next matches.”
WSU has their next match against SMU at 2 p.m. on Thursday in Irving, Texas.
