Snow reason not to exercise

Cold is an understatement when describing the recent weather.

This frigid winter has turned me into a layering master, usually wearing a few sweatshirts under my coat. I’ve also started drinking hot tea in an attempt to keep myself warm. With all this effort put into maintaining a normal body temperature, removing my layers and heading to the gym is often the last thing on my mind.

It’s hard to stay motivated in the winter. The snow that has accumulated within the past week has become another obstacle between me and working out (or doing anything).

One way to combat the cold is sneaking in little workouts throughout the day. When faced with the dilemma of taking the stairs or elevator, opt for the stairs. Try doing some jumping jacks or push-ups during commercial breaks of your favorite show. Small things can make a big difference.

Utilizing your time on campus wisely can also help. If you are going to be on campus and have a long break, bring your gym bag and stop by the Heskett Center. Since you’re already out, you’re more likely to be motivated. It’s much harder to peel yourself out of your warm bed early in the morning.

Another way I combat not feeling like going to the gym is by putting on my exercise gear and tennis shoes and just walking around the house. I can’t get back in the bed with my shoes on, so it leaves me with no other option but to work out.

It doesn’t matter what the season is, there’s always going to be an excuse. In the summer, you could argue that it’s too warm outside to go inside and sweat.

Any little trick that keeps you inspired and striving to meet your goals is worth paying attention to. There will always be obstacles, but if you have the will to overcome them, anything is possible.
