Being a Shocker today is being part of history
A realization hit me last Saturday when Wichita State’s men’s basketball team and head coach Gregg Marshall cut down the basketball net after the game against Drake.
It’s been obvious the team is making history. What didn’t occur to me is that I, along with the rest of Wichita State, am part of this university’s history.
Even though we may not all attend games, and do nothing more than support our Shockers, we are still part of this historic time.
How many college students can say that their basketball team is the only undefeated team in the United States? And how many college students can say the last time its basketball team lost a game was playing in a NCAA Final Four game?
We Shockers should recognize that as students of this university, we are part of this historic moment.
Even if we don’t spend every waking moment doing something Shocker basketball-related, like following the polls online or obsessively trying to meet players, we are still a part of it.
Our men’s basketball team has made history this year. Of course, they remain undefeated and are closer than ever to having a perfect season. And they won the Missouri Valley Conference championship. Incredible.
I may not be the biggest sports fan, but I could not be prouder of the team and of being a Shocker student. I am a part of this historic time. You all are, too, and you should also be proud.
