Oh joy, it’s time for that dreaded holiday

Valentine’s Day — the day of the year I hate more than any other — is upon us.

One might say I’m the Ebenezer Scrooge of this chocolate, jewelry and roses day. My dislike of the day is equivalent, or maybe stronger than Scrooge’s repuganance of Christmas. However, unlike Scrooge, my opinion will not change.

Some may say it’s just because I’m single that I hate this holiday. That could not be further from the truth.

I pride myself on entering my 20th consecutive Valentine’s Day single, and I plan on making it 21 next year.

My dislike of the holiday, comes from its over-commercialization. Thanks to strong advertisements and the pressures to have a Valentine, this holiday gets more exposure than it deserves.

This holiday celebrates love and being in a relationship. But that’s no reason people need to go overboard reveling.

Spending hundreds of dollars for your significant other just for this holiday seems a bit preposterous to me.

Of course, my being single for nearly 20 years probably fuels my thoughts about this, but still, to spend hundreds of dollars to celebrate your love is a bit over the top.

To me, all it takes is a nice dinner, a good movie and some alone time, away from the children (if you have them) to enjoy the holiday with your partner.

There’s no need to go buy dozens of flowers just to impress your lady.

Conversely, there’s no call for buying your man some sort of piece of expensive jewelry or sports equipment to show him your love.

Buying expensive gifts for your love for this Valentine’s Day seems to me like people are putting a price on love.

In other words, the idea that the more expensive gift you buy, the happier your partner will be — it’s wrong.

Besides the commercialization of the holiday, the holiday is also referred to as “Single Awareness Day.”

Basically this says single people should be acknowledged in this world, and maybe they are just searching for this right person.

Don’t give me that baloney. Call it “Single Awareness Day” all you want, but I’m pretty sure everyone and their mother knows I’m single and I intend to keep it that way. Relationships just are not for some people, and society needs to wake up and see this.

February 14 will just be another Friday for me. I might be spending the day with friends, not even acknowledging that it’s Valentine’s Day.
