How to kick back over fall break

Next Monday and Tuesday mark fall break. While the break is only two days, it’s still plenty of time for fun indoor and outdoor activities.

Halloween Movie Marathon

With Fall Break only a few weeks before Halloween, it’s a perfect time to catch up on scary movies. Since you won’t be able to find a Blockbuster, Netflix or Family Video are your best bets.

Netflix houses archives of scary movies and thrillers you can stream from the comfort of your couch.  Some classic Halloween movies include: “Halloween,” “Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Hocus Pocus” and “Friday the 13th.” If you feel inclined to leave the couch, venture to a local theater to catch a scary movie.

Wichita Museums

Wichita is home to many museums that cater to the interests of a diverse audience. Located downtown, admission is free at the Wichita Art Museum on Saturdays.

Nearby, the Museum of World Treasures displays everything from dinosaur artifacts to Ancient Egyptian relics. While it is closed on Mondays, Exploration Place offers lots of science-based hands on exhibits. For hours and more information, visit the websites of each museum.

Gun Range

Located at 1455 N. Terrace, Bullseye Shooting Range has pistol and rifle shooting ranges. You don’t have to be a member to shoot.

The facility also offers classes such as, “Concealed Carry,” “Women’s Handgun” and private instruction courses. The Bullet Stop, at 2625 W. Pawnee, also has shooting ranges and offers classes.

For more information on both facilities, visit their websites. Bullseye  Shooting Range: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Bullet Stop: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Pumpkin Patch or Corn Maze

Give fall an official welcome by visiting a pumpkin patch or corn maze. Cox Farms, 6059 S. Seneca, boasts the largest pumpkin patch in Wichita. Visitors are able to pick pumpkins straight off the vine from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and they cost $4 to $8.

In addition to a pumpkin patch, Cox Farms also has a corn maze through Oct. 31 with a $5 admission.

If you don’t mind a drive, Bergmann’s pumpkin patch and farm is located in Haysville at 8401 S. Meridian. Bergmann’s is home to the largest corn maze in Kansas. For directions and more, go to both of the farms’ websites.

Explore Downtown

Downtown Wichita has a lot that can be discovered on a sunny day. Riverside Park is a great place to go for a long run or walk. Riverside also has a small, free zoo.

The Keeper of the Plains is close to the park. Every night, a ring of fire burns in front of the Keeper for 15 minutes at 9 p.m. nightly. Downtown is also host to numerous coffee shops, thrift stores and an antique mall. Spend a day rediscovering Wichita.
