Shocktoberfest spirit lives on in green eggs and ham

Shocktoberfest’s “ObSeussed with Shocktoberfest” kept with its theme during a breakfast for students with Wichita State president John Bardo.

Yesterday was “Green Eggs and Ham with Bardo,” the second event for Shocktoberfest 2013. Students were free to come to the RSC for a breakfast as Bardo gave a speech and the finalists of Man and Woman of the year were presented.

Students appreciated having an opportunity to be around Bardo.

“He sort of has this air of transparency, and this makes him feel a lot closer than this guy sitting up there over everyone,” said George Swartzendruber, a member of SAC.

In keeping with the theme of “ObSeussed with Shocktoberfest,” the breakfast did include green eggs and ham, and not bad at that.

“I’ve had green eggs and ham one other time a long time ago, and this is far superior,” Swartzendruber said.

The underlying theme of the event was its sense of tradition. To strengthen that idea, members of sorority Gamma Phi Beta presented President Bardo with a ticket to their fund raising event, Grilled Cheese with G Phi Bs.

“He [Bardo] was talking about tradition, and this is our second year doing the fundraiser,” said Mattie Mae, member of Gamma Phi Beta. “It’s like we’re starting our own tradition, and we want him to be a part of it.”

Later, Bardo said that new things crop up every year as the result of a new generation, and that those new ideas become tradition to the next generation. He stressed the importance of feeling connected to the university with more than just academics, and that’s why tradition is a great way for students to be involved.

“It [tradition] really does connect students, lifetime-wise, to the institution,” Bardo said.
