Where to go for a night of fright

Field of Screams

In its 10th year, Field of Screams has been a popular haunted attraction in Wichita. For this year, Field of Screams remodeled one of its buildings, put in a new path, incorporated animated props and added more pyrotechnics.

Owner Kip Scott said this professional haunt is a large production that costs thousands of dollars per night to operate. The field takes around 35 minutes to get through.

“We require all the actors to attend actor training and sign a performance contract,” Scott said.

Field of Screams is the only haunt in the state to attract national attention and was once mentioned in “Rolling Stone” magazine. The line has a long wait time, but this haunt is worthy of all the hype. Other highlights include a Zombie Paintball Hunt and Clown Town.

The attraction is located at 4055 N. Tyler Road. Gates open at 7:00 p.m. and the field opens at dark.

Because this weekend is past Halloween, admission has been discounted. For Field of Screams and Clown Town a ticket is $15, Zombie Paintball is $10 and the Super Combo Ticket, including all events is $20. You can also opt to pay a little more for a fast pass to skip the lines, available online at www.scaryprairiepines.com. The field will stay open until Nov. 2.

Wicked Woods

This is the second year Wicked Woods has been a haunted attraction in Wichita. It is a forest filled with ghosts, creatures and demonic entities that don’t want visitors to leave as they brave the trail.

The idea for the woods came about last season, when one couple’s love for Halloween prompted them to open their own fright night attraction.

Contributor Deydra Campbell said this is a family business where the actors are family and friends.

“It was just a spur of the moment idea,” Campbell said. “This year, we have had about three times more people visit us. All the props are made by hand, which makes them authentic, and most you won’t ever see in a typical Halloween store.”

Wicked Woods is located at 3640 S. Topeka Street, just north of the Broadway and MacArthur intersection on Topeka Street.

Hours are 8:00 p.m. to midnight, and the haunt will stay open until Nov. 2.

Admission is $13 per person.

Udall Forest of Fear

Although the drive is a bit toilsome, the Forest of Fear is literally in the middle of nowhere, giving an eerie feeling, more so than what guests were already expecting.

Located in Udall, Kan., this real haunted forest features mad doctors, possessed humans and crazy characters.

The attraction is built on a haunted plot of forest and has documented evidence of strange occurrences dating back to the late 1800’s. Documentation can be viewed on the forest’s website and shows various occurrences found by paranormal researchers. There have been numerous suicides and murders in the forest, which inspired the Halloween diversion.

The Forest of Fear is located 3 miles east of Udall on K-15, about a 30-minute drive from Wichita.

It will be open until Nov. 2, and admission is $15 per person. The forest opens at dark and stays open until midnight.
