‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ a satisfying sequel scare

First things first — if you have not seen the first installment of “Insidious,” do so immediately. “Insidious: Chapter 2” has everything you want from a sequel.

Let me give you a brief synopsis of the storyline from the first “Insidious.” The main character, Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), had the ability to contact the dead while sleeping.

However, in this vulnerable state, if or when the dead noticed him, they became jealous and wanted to live again by possessing his body while he was in the world of the dead. This ability was suppressed when Josh was a young boy.

The ability was passed to Josh’s son Dalton (Ty Simpkins), and Dalton unwittingly became lost in the land of the dead. Josh must unlock his suppressed ability and enter the land of the dead to save his son.

In doing so, his body may have become possessed, which is where we are left to start “Chapter 2.”

The movie starts with an intriguing backstory on how Josh met ghost medium Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), letting the audience get back into the movie plot immediately while keeping a great deal of mystery.

It picks up with Josh and his wife Renai (Rose Byrne) grieving Elise’s death. A murder investigation is ongoing, and Renai can’t decide if she trusts her husband because of his strange behavior.

We get answers to questions left from the first installment and some jaw dropping moments to keep the audience entertained.

All the credit should go to the people behind-the-scenes, for building on previous characters and expanding on a storyline that leaves the audience guessing and on edge.

I was more scared than I can remember being at any horror movie in the past couple years.

Aside from the obviously fake goatee on ghost expert, Carl (Steve Coulter), and some dialogue that detracted the viewer from the movie, I give “Insidious: Chapter 2” a solid 8 out of 10.
