Upcoming albums to watch for

This fall will see the return of legends like Paul McCartney as well as new acts such as Grouplove. Here is my list for the top albums set to release this fall that are (almost) sure to hit up the radio, the music charts and even the Grammys.

#6 Katy Perry – “Prism” Oct. 22

The single “Roar” captured ears and accolades and even stole the show at the MTV Video Music Awards (without even having a video).

It also kicked off the arms race of the pop stars with her single competing directly with Lady Gaga’s “Applause.” Perry takes the lead with a better single, but Gaga could certainly strike with a more well-rounded album.

Regardless, it will be a spectacle for us all.

#5 Elton John – “The Diving Board” – Sept. 24

Marking his 30th, yes 30th, solo album, Elton John is returning to his simple piano, bass and drums roots.

After offering vocals to Fall Out Boy, this could certainly be a turn for John as he modernizes while maintaining what made him great.

#4 MGMT – “MGMT Sept. 17

Still thriving off of the 2010 singles “Kids” and “Time to Pretend,” the psychedelic duo are set to return with, hopefully, more mind-melting goodness.

The album will also feature visual elements to enhance the album. These elements include video and CGI that will be included with the album as a package.

#3 Grouplove – “Spreading Rumors” – Sept. 17

Little is known about the new album, except that it will be the group’s sophomore album following their successful introduction to the world.

Their 2011 single “Tongue Tied” hit the radio and the charts while the group still maintained a “hipster” audience. If this trend can continue, the group will see success on both fronts with their new record.

#2 Kings of Leon – “Mechanical Bull” – Sept. 24

Following a cancelled tour, a hiatus and rumors of breaking up, Kings of Leon surprised everyone with a sixth studio album.

The bands previous record, “Come Around Sundown,” received mixed reviews and was generally perceived as a letdown after the hugely successful “Only by the Night.”

If this album turns things around, they will once again run the alternative scene.

Fun fact: All of Kings of Leon’s albums have five syllables.

#1 Arcade Fire – “Reflektor” Oct. 28

Arguably the most successful independent act ever is returning this fall as my number one most anticipated album of the fall.

The band was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the Grammys for every album they have released and even won Album of the Year in 2011. Nothing but greatness is expected from this band.

If they can live up to the hype and expectations of hipsters everywhere, they will continue their takeover of the Grammys and vinyl record players everywhere.
