Stay far away from ‘Getaway’

Get far, far away from the new movie in theatres, “Getaway.”

Ethan Hawke plays an overrun and burned out ex-race car driver, Brent Magna, who is thrown back behind the wheel to save his wife.

Armed with a heavily souped-up Ford Mustang and a sidekick super genius younger hacker, played by Selena Gomez, Magna must try to save the love of his life by following pointless, over the phone orders of a criminal mastermind voiced by Jon Voight.

The movie is only 90 minutes long, but to the credit of director Courtney Solomon, not a moment is wasted. Not even for expanding on the plot or explaining why the movie takes place in Bulgaria, of all places.

The one or two redeeming moments of the movie are unfortunately missed by most because they come at a point when the audience is already so numb to the speed and constant intensity of the movie.

When a plot involves two people, a disembodied voice and 90 minutes of constant speed, you’d hope for some good explosions, but even the carnage is disappointing.

“Getaway” is definitely one to avoid. It accomplishes the impressive task of vanishing completely from your mind as you’re sitting in the theater watching it.

If I were one for giving great reviews based on how many police cars were crashed, “Getaway” would be the highest ranked movie of all time. Unfortunately for “Getaway,” I’m not. I give this movie a D, right below “Total Recall.” At least that one had Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel.
