See it or Skip it – April 11

42

This biographical film chronicles the breaking of the color barrier in Major League Baseball with Brooklyn Dodgers second baseman Jackie Robinson. Although there has already been a film made about Robinson, with the man himself in the title role, and some critics might be disappointed with the liberties taken with the events in the film, “42” should nevertheless deliver an inspirational story that moviegoers will greatly appreciate.

The Place Beyond the Pines

“Blue Valentine” director Derek Cianfrance reunites with Ryan Gosling, who portrays a skilled motorcyclist who resorts to robbing banks to make a living. All the while, an ambitious rookie cop (played by Bradley Cooper) is in close pursuit. This premise is a nice change from other movies of this sort that use technology-savvy criminals against government officials and uniqueness shall be rewarded.

Scary Movie 5

Really? Are they really resurrecting something that died seven years ago? The first two “Scary Movie” films were notable for their raunchy R-rated humor that fifth-graders craved. Everything past the third film was downgraded with PG-13 ratings, so that those same fifth-graders could get into the theater without even having to sneak in. The only reason to see those was because of Leslie Nielsen, but he’s sadly no longer with us. As for this new film, it’s no longer funny to parody horror films, or just films in general as this film will be, since that’s the basis for most Internet humor these days. Don’t allow yourself to see something that only a fifth-grader would find funny.

Trance

Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle turns in a crime thriller about the theft of a painting and the various criminals who want to get their hands on it. There are various twists and turns for the characters along the way. For a standard heist film, Boyle manages to give it a unique look with lots of saturated colors and reality-blurring editing. Once again, uniqueness shall be rewarded.
