WSU offers free tax preparation help
With the 15th of April getting dangerously close, several students find themselves overwhelmed as they try to figure out how to file their taxes. A lot of these students who are filing taxes are doing it for the very first time in their lives and have no idea where to begin.
United Way and the IRS have entered a nationwide partnership to provide help to a section of the population with free help with the filing of taxes. The Office for Faculty Development and Student Success has therefore applied to be a tax prep site for this year as a part of the Financial Literacy Project.
“We did the necessary paperwork to become a tax prep site this year,” Timothy Hagan, the coordinator for the Financial Literacy Project at WSU, said. “And most certainly we hope we will be a site next year, too.”
The project involved volunteers from the staff at Wichita State undergoing training offered by the IRS. The training prepared them to go about helping students file their taxes this year. Students can set up an appointment over phone or email and meet with the volunteer to figure out how to go about filing their taxes.
“Our service is open to anyone with an adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less,” Audrey Garrett, with the Office of Faculty Development and Student Success, said. Garrett explained that the service was offered to anyone with a gross adjusted income below $57,000 whether or not they were students at WSU.
The project has been helping students and members of the community since the 5th of February, 2013.
“We have helped 61 clients since the first week of February and have appointments scheduled through the rest of this week and on Monday morning,” Garrett said, adding that they would like to help as many students as they could before the 15th.
Students can set up an appointment by contacting the coordinator of the Financial Literacy Project, Timothy Hagan at [email protected] or 316-978-3211.
