See it or Skip it – April 4

Jurrasic Park 3D

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” returns to theater screens, namely an IMAX 3D presentation. I caught the preview of this while seeing “Oz: The Great and Powerful” at the IMAX, and it was slightly headache-inducing, due to the 3D conversion process the film undertook, which made portions of the screen blurry. Hopefully, this doesn’t happen throughout the whole film, but I think a simple IMAX presentation would have sufficed, like last year’s effort with “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” Although it wasn’t my favorite film from 1993, which was “Last Action Hero” if you were wondering, and Michael Crichton handled the idea of an amusement run amok much better in his previous film titled “Westworld,” this re-release should prove to be exciting. I really want to see what those speakers are made of, since the opening scene in the film is designed to showcase that kind of power.

Evil Dead

The remake of the Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic arrives this weekend with a poster proclaiming that this film is “the most terrifying film you will ever experience.” So far, critical reaction has been positive. It will be interesting to see if a modern-day horror film reaches the levels of total terror, which has only happened for me on two occasions, while watching the original “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” and Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining.” However, it seems a little off to have an “Evil Dead” without the signature character of Ash.
