G.I. Joe: Retaliation

The long delayed sequel to “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” finally arrives in theaters this weekend. Although “The Avengers” set the bar pretty high for ensemble action films, the previews promise that this film to be a satisfying example of its genre with Bruce Willis and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson headlining. Seeing this in 2D should be enough, rather than the 3D version that took a half year to complete.

Emperor

This World War II historical drama covers the events that took place when Japan’s Emperor Hirohito was on trial for war crimes. Matthew Fox stars as Gen. Bonner Fellers, who is left to make the decision if Hirohito shall be hanged by the neck, while at the same time he remembers a previous love affair with a Japanese exchange student he intends to find again. Also featured is Tommy Lee Jones as the General Douglas MacArthur. Although this all sounds like the proper ingredients for a romantic historical drama, “Emperor” has been receiving mostly mediocre reviews. I recommend waiting until a video release, unless you have a fix for World War II dramas.

The Host

The film adaptation of “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s attempt at science fiction looks and sounds a lot like it belongs in a triple pack of films with “Battlefield Earth” and “Eragon,” something that’s even overpriced for $5 at Wal-Mart. It also doesn’t help that the story features a love triangle. Where have we seen this before? Hopefully, this won’t entitle another series of never-ending, no-reason-other-than money, multiple-part sequels. One “Host” is enough for everyone.

Tyler Perry’s Temptation

The reputation of writer-director Tyler Perry sinks even lower in this critically panned drama about a marriage counselor engaged in a relationship with a social media mogul. You know it’s bad when measures like a racy movie poster have to be taken in order to get attention. A co-starring role for Kim Kardashian isn’t doing any favors at all.
