The sport of baseball: A game anyone can enjoy
I am a baseball fan; I always have been and always will be. I believe it is a game that anyone can enjoy regardless of who they are or where they are from. I attribute much of this to the simplicity of the game.
Baseball is not an inherently difficult sport the way that most others are. There are few penalties, even fewer reviews on botched calls, and no real changes in how points are scored. When a player crosses home plate a point is added to the scoreboard—it’s as simple as that.
Baseball is a sport that anyone can pick up and play within minutes, requiring only a small explanation of the rules. All you have to do is go out onto the field and throw, hit and catch the ball, most of which you’ve probably already been doing since you were three years old.
One of the first things most of us learn as a kid is the concept of hand/eye coordination by learning how to catch and throw a ball. From there all you have to do is know when to swing the bat and run as fast as you can after you hit the ball.
Even if you don’t like playing the game there is more than enough to enjoy as a fan in the stadium though. The sounds of the game are like none other.
From the crack of the bat making contact with the ball to the screaming fans after a deadening silence as they watch in eager anticipation to see if the batter is going to hit a home run, baseball stadiums are an auditory wonderland unlike any other.
And don’t forget that ballpark food waiting to clog up your arteries. Nachos, hot dogs and a nice cold beer are the perfect way to enjoy a lull in action or keep someone who doesn’t have a love for the game at bay as you enjoy the show.
For me, there is nothing as simple, relaxing and entertaining to watch as a good game of baseball. If you have never given the game a shot I highly recommend doing so. Wichita State games are free for students and in a worst-case scenario you enjoy some deliciously unhealthy foods while supporting your classmates on the field.
