SAC aims to improve student involvement

Have you ever wondered who sponsors a lot of the events around campus? Look no further than SAC, the Student Activities Council. They are one of the largest student organizations on campus and host to more than 150 events annually.

Some of its most popular events include Welcomefest, Family Carnival, Shocktoberfest, Hippodrome and Gamefest, as well as a whole host of live entertainment and other events.

SAC features 10 different committees within its organization. Each committee is responsible for different student events.

The Arts Committee supports and promotes all the visual and creative events at WSU. Events that fall within its category include arts and crafts days, the final Friday gallery crawl tour bus, and the fall arts and crafts fair.

The Campus Traditions Committee supports Wichita State’s heritage. They are responsible for spirit week, Shocktoberfest, and Hippodrome.

The Family Committee emphasizes bonding time. They specialize in kid-friendly events such as the annual Family Carnival, movie nights, and Trunk or Treat.

The Gaming Committee lets you get in touch with your inner geek through a wide array of fun events. They host game shows, video game marathons, and utilize traditional and underground board games for an old-school feel.

Some of their more popular events include the dodge ball tournament, Humans vs. Zombies, and the Magic: The Gathering Tournament.

The Membership Committee focuses on unity. They encourage togetherness through retreats, social projects and community service.

The Promotions Committee coordinates the marketing of SAC. They focus on promoting SAC through fun activities like Huxley’s Birthday and welcome tents.

The Shocker Night Life Committee provides students with late night entertainment. Some of its popular events include Karaoke Nights, comedians and guest speakers.

The Shocker Spirit Committee collaborates with campus organizations to encourage school spirit. They organize Welcome Fest and promote Shocker pride with various events like the Yellow and Black Ball.

The Social Network Committee specializes in utilizing virtual media to reach out to students. They hold online contests that urge student participation and involvement.

The Wu’s Renewal Committee brings musical groups and Finals Frenzy to campus. Popular events include Shocker Spirit Bingo and Little Shock of Horrors.

The president of SAC is pre-med senior Tessa Cattermole. She has been a part of SAC for three years and president of it the last two.

She encourages students to get involved on campus.

“I am extremely passionate about SAC because of what it brings to Wichita State,” she said. “We help create the ‘college experience’ for students by ensuring that there’s always something to do on campus. We also provide a lot of valuable development and leadership opportunities for students and serve as an event planning resource for other organizations. Personally, SAC has helped me develop many skills as well as network and feel truly connected to the campus.”

SAC membership is open to all students who have a spare two hours or more a week and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Being a member is a good way to develop friendships, foster unity on campus and build valuable leadership skills for later in life.
