Shockers fall to mid-week pressure

The weather during last night’s baseball game against Kansas University was bad, but the playing was worse. The Shockers lost 10-3.

“Cody Tyler couldn’t go six innings,” head coach Todd Butler said. “He hasn’t pitched enough.”

Tyler gave up four runs in the top of the first inning before being replaced by Ray Ashord.

The pitching changes didn’t stop after Ashford. Drew Palmer replaced Ashford after he had one earned run hit off of him, but Palmer couldn’t silence the Jayhawks in his three innings either.

By the time Palmer was replaced, the Jayhawks gained another two runs to make the score 7-3, Kansas at the top of the eighth.

Foster Vielock relieved Palmer, but when T.J. Looney finished the ninth inning, the Jayhawks had tallied three more runs and 14 hits.

“Right now we’re good on the weekends because we can pitch. We have three good starters and relievers,” Butler said. “It’s about having enough talent to survive middle of the week, and you have to have enough players to do so.”

Despite the bleak pitching, the hitting seemed no better.

“Mid-week is pretty tough on us to win,” Butler said. “It’s been like this all year, and you have to do more offensively than three runs and six hits.”

The Shockers face Oklahoma State University at home at 6:30 p.m. today, with Kris Gardner as their starting pitcher.
