Shockers swarmed by Pelicans

Wichita State went down to the bayou to visit Tulane University for a weekend series of baseball with the Green Wave.

The Shockers started the weekend off on Friday with A.J. Ladwig pitching nine shutout innings and going into extra innings the score was tied at zero.

The Shockers scored a run in the top of the 12th inning on a wild pitch, which allowed Micah Green to score. The Pelicans answered with a run of their own to tie it at one each and then the Green Wave’s Andrew Garner hit a walk off grand slam later in the inning to take the first game of the series 5-1.

The next day the Shockers started off hot as Chase Simpson hit a three-run home run to right field to give WSU a 3-0 lead.

Tulane would answer back in the bottom of the third with a SAC fly to center to score Grant Brown. Tulane then evened the score at three after the bottom of the six with Willsey and Garrett Deschamp both scored.

Then in the bottom of the seventh the Green Wave scored again as Johnny Gandolfo scored on a single from Jake Rogers to give the Green Wave the lead 4-3.

Tanner Dearman then hit his first career home run in the top of the ninth to tie up the game at four. Tulane would answer in the bottom of the ninth and Garner then scored on a single by Kaplan to win the game by a score of 5-4.

WSU pitcher Sam Tewes, who went eight innings with only one earned run and a career high seven strikeouts, dominated Sunday afternoon’s game. The Shockers would go on to win by a score of 10-3.

Zair Koeiman led Wichita State at the plate. The Shockers went 2-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Tyler Baker also went 1 for 4 with two RBIs.
