Former pitcher creates waves with radio show

It didn’t take long for former Wichita State director of baseball operations Shane Dennis to find a new position after being let go after the firing of Gene Stephenson.

He found a new home on KFH Radio with his own radio show just a few months later.

Tony Duesing, director of programming at KFH, approached Dennis after his departure from the WSU baseball program. Dennis had previously filled in for Bruce

Haertl and Bob Lutz on their Sports Daily program, so Duesing knew he could handle his own show.

“We knew he was good on the air and a good fill-in, so we thought this was probably the perfect time to bring him on board,” Duesing said.

Dennis played at Wichita State as a pitcher from 1991-1994 and spent four seasons with the San Diego Padres and two seasons in Japan before becoming the director of baseball operations for the Wichita Wranglers in 2001.

Dennis said playing ball in Japan is different from playing in the U.S. There, he said, fans are always making noise and blaring horns — almost like the halftime in a football game.

“There’s always noise going on, always something going on, it’s a real festive atmosphere,” he said.

Even though he has a strong history with baseball, Dennis said he likes talking about football more because baseball can be boring at times with how long its seasons are.

“Baseball is a world series kind of sport,” he said. “Once that rolls around, with the playoffs and the World Series, it’s good. But generally speaking, probably football is the better one to talk about.”

Dennis said Duesing leaves most of the show’s content up to him. Duesing helps him by bouncing ideas off of each other, but leaves day-to-day basis up to Dennis, he said.

You can listen to Dennis on his show weekdays from 5 to 7 p.m. and giving play-by-play during WSU Baseball games on KFH.
