Shockers beat down Braves

The Wichita State Shockers faced off against the Bradley Braves in Charles Koch Arena on Friday night, and the Shockers dominated throughout the match.

Charles Koch Arena had a record number of fans for this season of 3302 that packed the arena, and cheered Wichita State to a victory.

The Shockers would go on to win in straight sets with the ruckus crowd behind them and leading the way was Sam Sanders with 11 kills, Chelsey Feekin with 35 assists, and Dani Molstrom had 16 kills.

The Shockers came out slow in the first set, but soon picked up the pace. After the score being tied at 11, a long rally ensued with both teams trying to kill the ball on the other.

Because of bad communication, the Braves lobbed one over the net. Chelsey Feekin set the ball perfectly to Ashley Andrade, who killed it right down the middle.

Wichita State never lost the lead after that, and continued to destroy Bradley on offense and defense. The first set ended with the Shockers winning 25-19.

The second set was a lot of the same with the Shockers starting out on a 3-0 run by Ashley Andrade absolutely hammering the ball in all different spots of the court. Bradley continued to struggle as the Shockers put an absolute beat down when it came to attacking.

After leading 20-13 late in the set, Bradley took a timeout to try and slow the Shockers’ pace. But the Shockers went on to win five of the next seven points, claiming the second set with a score of 25-15.

The Shockers again came out on a hot start with a 9-4 run to start the game, and the set continued great plays from all of the Wichita State attackers. At one point in the middle of the set the Shockers went on a 7-0 run to put the score at 20-7.

Then with the huge crowd behind them, the Shockers put the finishing touches on the match with Mary Ashton Floyd killing the ball for two out of the last three points to win the last set 25-12. In the final set, the Shockers finished with a 72 percent hitting rate.

“[We] came out playing defense like we normally have, but as the season has evolved we had now gone back to the simpler defense,” Head coach Chris Lamb said. “In Division 1 volleyball, you need to have a great defense because that’s where the matches are won and lost.”

“We have learned to adapt. That’s always how it’s been here [at Wichita State] and it’s just changing up a few things on the defensive side and we get used to it,” Andrade said.

The Shockers are now 18-4 on the season, and finish up their five game home stand this weekend. The team will play Drake on Friday at 7 p.m. and UNI Saturday at 7 p.m. Both games are in Charles Koch Arena.
