Shockers dominate competition at Comcast matchup

The Shocker Volleyball team made a trip to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Comcast Lady Volleyball Classic this past weekend and returned with another tournament title.

Wichita State played teams from all over the country, but in the end, they were no match for the Shockers.

The Shockers dominated their first opponent, East Tennessee State. Sophomore Ashlyn Driskill led WSU with 10 kills, Chelsey Feekin had 34 assists and Alyssa Carney had nine digs.

The team continued their winning ways and rolled over host team, Tennessee, winning the sets 3-0. Once again, there were impressive performances by Feekin with 34 assists, Driskill with nine digs and Katie Reilly, also with nine digs, proving that the Volunteers didn’t have much of a chance.

The Shockers then played the VCU Rams and defeated them by scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-22. The Rams put up a fight in the third set, tying the match at 22, but two back-to-back kills from Reilly sealed the deal as the Shockers rolled on.

The Shockers beat their final opponent, Austin Peay State, by scores of 25-16, 25-8, and 25-10. The seniors were on fire, as Ashley Andrade led the team with 10 kills, Sam Sanders had eight kills and Feekin had 29 assists en route to another impressive victory.

Over the weekend, the Shocks went 4-0, which brings them to 9-1 on the season.

The team will host their own tournament this weekend, playing their first home game 6 p.m. Thursday night against Missouri State in Charles Koch Arena.

Three other teams, Creighton, Hawaii and South Dakota, will also play. The Shockers will play South Dakota at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Hawaii at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Creighton at 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
