Shocker women’s hoops keep postseason hopes alive with win at UAB

Wichita State women’s basketball picked up a much-needed win Wednesday night to stay in the race for the American Conference Championship with a 60-54 road victory over UAB.

The Shockers’ record improved to 7-21 overall and 4-11 in American Conference play. They’re currently one game behind Tulane in the league standings, which is the last team in.

WSU can move into a tie for 10th when it plays the Green Wave Saturday at 1 p.m. in New Orleans. Tulane beat the Shockers 70-60 earlier this season at Koch Arena.

Graduate forward Treasure Thompson (game-high 19 points), graduate guard Abby Cater (18), and junior forward Jaida McDonald (12) led a three-headed attack for WSU throughout the game. Thompson’s 19 points was also a season high and Cater notched a double-double with 10 rebounds.

And after allowing the Blazers to shoot lights out in their first meeting, the Shockers held them to 19% from 3-point range on Wednesday.

UAB started fast, however, and went into the first media timeout while on a 7-0 run to take an 11-4 advantage. Thompson later ended a five-minute scoring drought with two minutes left in the first quarter that sparked an 8-3 run for WSU.

Graduate forward Bre’Yon White hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to cap off the run and end the period, 17-12.

The Shockers found momentum again late in the second quarter and went on a 7-0 run amid a three-and-a-half minute UAB scoring drought to cut the deficit to a point, 27-26.

But the Blazers ended the first half scoring the final four points and created a little breathing room, 30-27.

WSU took the lead soon after the break by starting the second half on a 5-0 run. The third quarter went back-and-forth as UAB held its three-point advantage going into the fourth, 41-38.

The Shockers called a timeout and seemed to have regrouped after UAB went on a 5-0 run early in the final quarter. They eventually clawed back, going on an 8-0 run to retake the lead with three minutes left, 49-48.

White hit another three to keep the lead, and a layup by Thompson gave the Shockers a two-point advantage with 73 seconds left.

Graduate guard Taya Davis knocked down four-straight free throws to seal the victory for WSU.
