Men’s golf
Wichita State men’s golf took their talents to Vegas to play at the Lake Las Vegas Invitational from Monday to Wednesday. The Shockers came out with a ninth-place finish out of 12 teams at the tournament with 865 strokes, just one over par.
Senior Jose Miguel Ramirez made the top-20 among individuals at the tournament by shooting three under par in a four-way tie for 18th place.
Fellow Venezuelan senior Jose Carletta snuck into the top-25 by shooting one under par in another four-way tie, good for 24th place.
Wichita State will tee off next at the Golden Nugget Invitational in Lake Charles, La., at The Country Club at the Golden Nugget, Monday and Tuesday.
Men’s tennis
Wichita State men’s tennis rose above .500 over the week, culminating in a four-game win streak. They played back-to-back in Texas, against Abilene Christian University on Feb. 26 and the University of Texas-Arlington on Feb. 27.
The Shockers capped off the week with a win against No. 52 ranked Nebraska, 5-2.
Despite the 4-3 scoreline, the match against Abilene Christian was an easy win for Wichita State.
Sophomore Ilias Worthington and freshman Rodrigo Cruz took their court handily in a 6-1 win, while freshman Pablo Roche Alcaya and sophomore Zaid Al Mashni took care of business with a 6-3 win for the doubles point.
Al Mashni and Roche Alcaya won first on their singles courts to put the Shockers up 3-0. Cruz took the match for the Shockers in a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
The rest of the matches were played out despite the WSU win, and Abilene Christian won the remaining three courts after the virtual sweep.
The Shockers swept UT-Arlington, unsullied by any post-win gameplay on the courts. The Mavericks were missing one player, forfeiting a singles court and a doubles court.
Roche Alcaya and Al Mashni lost their matchup, 6-4, but Worthington and Cruz clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory.
Senior Luke Bracks won his court 6-3 and 6-1, and Roche Alcaya won his court 7-5, 6-1 to win the match. Cruz won by forfeit with no added drama.
Wichita State took the doubles point against Nebraska with senior Alejandro Jacome and freshman Felix Bockelmann-Evans winning the decider, 6-3.
Worthington finished first in a 6-0, 6-3 victory on the singles side, with Roche Alcaya behind him, 6-3, 6-1. Al Mashni clinched the match with a reverse sweep, 4-6, 6-0 and 6-1, as the rest of the courts finished up for a 5-2 Shocker victory.
Wichita State will be back at home for its matchup against Oklahoma State on Sunday. The first serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
