Alec Bohm, junior infielder of WSU baseball, made the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list that was released on Tuesday, April 10. The list is composed of 40 of the country’s top amateur players from the collegiate level.

Bohm has three grand slams so far this season, which is a school record for grand slams in a single season. If he has one more, he will be tied for the Wichita State career record of four. Bohm is also tied for the lead in grand slams with Matt Wallner from Southern Mississippi.

When the Shockers played ECU on Thursday, March 29, Bohm had a career high of six RBI. He also hit a home run in four straight games this season and is the first to do that since Sam Hilliard in 2015.

Bohm has eight home runs this season, along with 32 RBI, nine doubles, six stolen bases, and 32 runs. He was also named to The American Honor Roll for the week of April 2-8, named a preseason All-American four times, and was named to preseason all-conference.

The only Shocker in history to have ever won was Darren Dreifort in 1993 after he was a finalist in 1992. Last year, Brendan McKay of Louisville won the award.

According to USA Baseball, there are 13 NCAA conferences with athletes represented on the list, along with two NCAA Division II conferences. Florida, who is the 2017 College World Series champion, is ahead of all schools with three of their athletes on the midseason watch list.

Until Monday, May 21, athletes can continue to play themselves into consideration for the award. The winner of the Golden Spikes Award will be announced on Thursday, June 28 in Los Angeles.
