Blood drives honor memory of student killed in attack
Khondoker Usama said he wants to pay as much tribute to Jalil Alarbash as possible.
That’s why the Wichita State American Red Cross Club sponsored a blood drive Tuesday in honor of Alarbash, said Usama, who is president of the club.
Another drive is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday in the Shocker Hall Multipurpose Room.
Alarbash was killed in Saudi Arabia earlier this year during an attack at a mosque that was carried out by an ISIS suicide bomber. He was reportedly trying to prevent the suicide bomber from entering the mosque when a device exploded, killing Alarbash, his cousin, the bomber and two others, according to reports at the time.
Alarbash was an engineering student at WSU, according to a news release from the university. He was in Saudi Arabia to get married in his home country.
Usama said the Red Cross Club had a goal of 70 blood donations during a blood drive Tuesday in the Rhatigan Student Center. He said 60 units of blood were donated.
“It was pretty fantastic,” he said.
Usama said the Red Cross Club hopes to reach 70 more blood donations at the second drive Thursday.
He said blood drives during the fall semester are crucial because fewer people donate during this time of year. Usually, Usama said, more blood donations happen during the spring and summer.
However, this drive and Thursday’s are more about honoring a hero, Usama said.
“We are proud and honored to honor [Alarbash’s] memory,” he said. “We’ll continue to support his legacy on this campus.”
