Campus daycare center loses power Friday

A severe thunderstorm shut power down at the Fairmount Residence Hall and the Child Development Center late Thursday night.

The storm hit Wichita just after 12:30 a.m. and surged the power shortly after, causing the CDC — a campus daycare center — to close its doors all day Friday.

Broken tree limbs and branches scattered the barren parking lot that sits right on the corner of Hillside and 21st Street.

“I’m assuming the power went out when the storm moved through around 1 or 1:30 a.m.,” CDC Director Jillian Hoefer said.

Hoefer said the first teacher arrived at the building at 7:30 a.m. to no power. Parents dropping off their children had to find other accommodations for the day. The office has an alert system sent via text message notifying everyone who works in the office.

Hoefer says power is to be restored by 4:30 or 5 a.m. by Monday.
