Have fun with social media, but behave yourselves

Fade is just a gem of an app.

Specifically geared toward college campuses, Fade allows students to post pictures with optional text captions to a feed that’s generated according to which college you choose.

If you’re savvy with this sort of thing, Fade is like Yik Yak but uses images instead of text. The other important difference is that Fade users only get one anonymous post per day, with all others being attached to the (often fake) names students choose for their accounts.

Wichita State has been hit by the Fade bug for several months now. If I look at my feed at the time of this writing, I see memes, selfies and the poster for the 1991 Bruce Willis film “The Last Boy Scout” for some reason.

I mostly use it to anonymously post pictures of professional wrestlers looking dignified.

However, more often than not, Fade is significantly less innocuous than that. As you would probably expect, there has been a bit of a problem with nude photos.

Some people just post photos of themselves, which is fine. I honestly applaud people who are comfortable with their bodies.

I’m specifically talking about how some folks feel the need to start sock puppet accounts with false names and post nude photos of other people without making it clear that they received consent to do so.

If you have consent from the person in the photo, then go for it. But if you’re posting photos people sent to you for your eyes only, I can’t express how sleazy that is. Seriously, that’s gross.

Even if it’s just a photo of a stranger you found online, you still don’t have their blessing to post it in a public space like that. I don’t enjoy proselytizing like this, but this is pretty basic stuff. Without permission, you are violating someone’s privacy.

Things such as Fade, Yik Yak, whatever came before and whatever comes next are all meant to bring people together and help them have a good time. If we don’t give each other the basic respect we all deserve, we ruin the integrity of things that are supposed to just be fun.

So go ahead and post things that are funny, sad, boring or anything else. But be good to others in the process, all right?
