College of Engineering names new Wallace scholars

Eleven high school seniors bound for Wichita State’s College of Engineering joined an elite community of students when WSU President John Bardo and engineering dean Royce Bowden announced the Wallace Scholars on Friday.

Winners were chosen based on GPA and ACT scores and their performance at the annual Wallace Invitational for Scholarships in Engineering competition, held Dec. 5, which featured a hands-on team project and individual essay response.

Wallace Scholars for the 2015-16 academic year include:

• Grant Blizzard, Andover High School, undecided engineering

• Mary Buchele, Garden City High School, aerospace engineering

• Benjamin Fradella, Living Stones Academy, mechanical engineering

• Diego Gomez, Northwest High School (Ft. Worth, Texas), undecided engineering

• Meghan Grimes, Maize High School, electrical engineering

• Luke Hansen, Shawnee Mission High School, aerospace engineering

• John Colby Moore, Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics, (Oklahoma City, Okla.) aerospace engineering

• Hunter Picard, Rose Hill High School, electrical engineering

• Charlotte Rippy, Wichita East High School, computer science

• Kayle Schapmann, Norfolk High School (Norfolk, Neb.), aerospace engineering

• Brianna Wallace, Bishop Miege High School (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) aerospace engineering

The new Wallace Scholars will be awarded $220,000 from the Wallace Scholarship fund this year, each receiving a four-year scholarship for a total of $20,000.

The Wallace Scholarship was created in 1976 by the Dwane and Velma Wallace Endowment to support the College of Engineering and provide scholarships for engineering students.
