WSU to play in first Top 25 matchup
The Wichita State men’s basketball team travels to Salt Lake City, Utah to play the Utah Runnin’ Utes in their first non-conference regular season Top 25 matchup since the 2006-07 season, when No. 17 WSU beat No. 15 Syracuse at the Carrier Dome, 64-61.
Utah (5-1) has won their games by an average margin of 34 points, their one loss was on the road against then-No. 16 San Diego State, a 53-49 nail biter in favor of the Aztecs.
SDSU relied heavily on their big men and were led by forward J.J. O’Brien who had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Wichita State (4-0) will look for another big game from their forward Darius Carter to exploit what SDSU was able to. In Carter’s 18 minutes against Tulsa last week, he scored 14 points, had four rebounds and one steal.
Wichita State’s defense will have to show up early to get the Utes off their game — Utah boasts a .533 field goal percentage, good for sixth in the nation.
Both teams’ defenses rank in the Top 25 in the nation in points allowed giving up a mere 55 points to opposition per contest.
With both offenses averaging over 80 points per game, something has to give.
WSU will need this win come March as no other team on their schedule is ranked in the Top 25 right now.
Wichita State had relied on Saint Louis bolstering their resume, but with two losses so far in this young season, the Billikens seem to be losing their touch.
Fans have come to expect wins from the WSU basketball team, as they haven’t lost a regular season game since March 2013, but Utah is their toughest test so far this season.
The Shockers play at 10 p.m. tonight on ESPN2.
