Tips to grow your heart three times if you’re a Christmas Grinch

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Except, for some people, it’s really not.

Like the Grinch in Dr. Seuss’s classic story, some of you hate, hate, hate or even loathe the Christmas season entirely.

I’ve experienced bouts of this. My dad starts listening to Christmas music in October.

That’s right, even before Halloween. When it’s barely fall, my parents’ house is already a jingle-belling wonderland.

Every year, my mom brings out approximately 12 boxes full of seasonal decorations, with which an entire Saturday is filled strewing, i.e. thoughtfully placing them, around the house. As a kid, this basically made for the worst weekend ever, and I know I emanated Grinch-like qualities while being forced to help find spaces for several of 27 apparently-unique snowmen.

For the past few Christmas decorating sessions, I’ve been able to slip out the door and return later in the evening when all that’s left is to spruce up the spruce with ornaments.

Shucks.

While I’ve found ways to deal with my family’s (and all other Christmas-obsessed individuals) seasonal festivities, you may still be struggling.

So, I’ve compiled a list of things that should help you survive the season. They may even grow your heart three sizes.

Embrace the season.

Christmas is one day a year that’s usually celebrated for about a month, maybe three in retail stores. You could choose to embrace it — really, it won’t last forever.

Tune your radio to B98 FM and sing along with the carols, help your mother with the snowflakes, reindeer and all other Christmas-themed embellishments, make Christmas cookies and drink some peppermint-flavored hot chocolate by the fireplace (or space heater, if that’s your situation).

With a good attitude, these activities are sure to warm your heart, if only due to the hot drink.

Get out the Christmas movies.

The only time of year when it’s truly appropriate to watch Christmas-themed movies is here. One way to chase away the Christmas blues is to get out the movies that never get old, no matter how many times you’ve seen them.

“A Christmas Story,” “Elf,” the Jim Carrey version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” or “White Christmas” are all great choices.

I might even let you count “Frozen,” since it is about snow, and of course, because everyone loves it.

Quote the movies with your friends and you’ll be sure to lift your spirits and confuse everyone around you.

The best way — actually help someone.

Christmas might be annoying or a nuisance for some, but for others, it’s the time of year when they can get help they might not receive during other seasons.

Many organizations and businesses hold coat, food and toy drives for needy families, and helping with these is really the only thing on this list that will grow your heart like the Grinch’s.

Hopefully you know his story, because I do only mean that figuratively.

Donate your time by volunteering or give some things you don’t need.

You’ll benefit and others will, too.

If you’ve reached the end of this list and you’re still feeling like a Grinch, well, you’re probably getting coal in your stocking.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
