WSU freshman provides thrills at haunted attraction

While most freshmen have been experiencing new activities for the first time, Wichita State freshman Marissa Campbell spent the last month and a half working at Field of Screams.

Field of Screams is a haunted attraction in west Wichita. The attraction is one long trail through a cornfield divided into two parts, Clown Town and the field of screams. There is also a fairly new attraction, Zombie Hunt, in which customers can shoot actors dressed as zombies with paintball guns.

“I have been doing it for so long,” Campbell said. “I just couldn’t imagine not doing it this year.”

Campbell started working at Field of Screams when she was 16. She worked as a zombie who got shot at. The second year, she came back to work out in the field. This year she was a part of Clown Town.

The haunted house had a record year. But with long hours and lines, Campbell said it didn’t matter because she had the other actors to lean on for support.

“Once you work here, you become part of a family,” she said. “Each night we got out later and later, but when you’re in there we support each other to push through.”

Most nights are very different for the actors at Field of Screams. One night Campbell was working with an animatronic where she pressed a button to unleash a Jack-in-the-Box on guests coming through.

“The reactions of people are the best.,” she said. “Many would fall down or freak out and I was in the perfect spot.”

Another night she was in a completely dark tunnel where she snuck up on guests. According to Campbell, every night was unique in that it was either busy or less busy.

And every night was a new crowd.

Although Campbell said she had a ton of fun working, she warns it is hard work.

“We are out here for hours on end until the last customer goes through. It is not for the weak.”
