Shocker Quidditch team faces KU, OSU

The Wichita State Quidditch team hosted its second annual Quidditch Sunflower Cup this past — and chilly — Saturday.

The Shockers played host to the University of Kansas and Oklahoma State University.

The WSU team started the tournament against KU. KU’s physicality took the Shockers by surprise and the Warhawks stole an early lead.

As per Quidditch regulations, the golden snitch, played by a non-playing team member, was released at 17 minutes. The team seekers are released at 18 minutes. Contrary to Harry Potter Quidditch, catching the golden snitch only earns the team 30 points instead of 150, making quaffle play more important.

The KU seeker managed to capture the snitch approximately five and a half minutes after the seekers “took flight,” ending the match 40-140, to KU.

OSU took to the field after the first match to play KU and surprised spectators, beating KU 120-60.

WSU was next against OSU. The Shockers regained momentum from their first loss. The snitch was released with WSU only down by one quaffle score. OSU’s seeker secured the victory for the team with a quick capture, ending the match for the Shockers 40-80.

After tournament intermission, WSU came back with more momentum against KU. At one point, the team was ahead of KU on quaffle scores but remained neck and neck with KU for most of the match. Once again, a quick snitch capture by KU’s seeker secured the win for KU and defeat for WSU with their closest match yet, ending 110-100.

OSU came back to beat KU and steamrolled them 160-40.

The final match between OSU and WSU saw promise for the flying Shockers. They took an early lead but ended up losing to the now undefeated OSU team.
