Matson named Dean of Fairmount College

After more than two years of serving as the school’s interim dean, Ron Matson has been named the dean of the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Matson was named the interim dean when former dean Bill Bischoff stepped down.

Matson was named Kansas professor of the year in 2011 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement and Support of Education.

He has been a professor in the sociology department for 42 years, acting as chair for 17.   

WSU student does well at Google Hackathon

Wichita State graduate student Zoya Khan contributed the idea behind the app that won the People’s Choice award at this year’s annual Google Hackathon competition.

The competition was during the national convention of the Society for Women Engineers at the end of October in Los Angeles.

The application was created using Java and Android studio and helps roommates or spouses collaborate to do things like grocery shopping, household chores or finances. The app is called Roommate Board.

Khan said her team hopes to release it for free for college students to use.

NCAA committee meet over Shocker Baseball infractions

About a year ago, Wichita State self-reported violations in the Wichita State baseball program. As a result, WSU suspended eight players for up to nine games.

WSU officials met with the NCAA Infractions Committee last week in Indianapolis to discuss the violations in the program.

The violations included issues with Shocker baseball players receiving athletic clothing at discounted prices.
