T-Swizzle releases fifth album

It doesn’t matter what you think of Taylor Swift — you should pay attention to her. This is Swift’s week, full of TV appearances on Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel, NBC’s the Voice, David Letterman and Good Morning America.

This week, Swift released her fifth album titled, “1989,” the year Swift was born.  Stepping away from her country roots, this is her first entirely pop album.

After recently moving to New York, Swift felt inspired to try new things with her sound. So she called people like Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic and Jake Antanoff from the group Fun. to begin producing “1989.”

Three songs were released early: “Shake it Off,” “Out of the Woods,” and “Welcome to New York.” All took turns on iTunes at No. 1 or No. 2.

Critics of Swift’s latest endeavor said it would only sell 600,000 records in the first week. It’s only the fourth day, and it’s on it’s way to selling one million, according to TIME magazine.

That’s because of the cohesive sound on this record, unlike Swift’s previous albums. She did this on purpose, because Rolling Stone Magazine called her out for consistency in her last album, 2012’s “Red.” She also has a constant theme on this record, which shows appropriate maturity for 24-year-old Swift.

“1989” will forever stick out in Swift’s astronomically long list of No. 1 albums because of its unique sensibility. All the songs tell a story in usual Swift fashion, but still definitely sound like a pop album.

And the best way to listen to it is from start to finish.

Swift also did something for the fans, somewhat unheard of for modern-day pop stars. She invited 89 fans in each city she has over to her house for a listening party before the album came out. She handpicked the fans based on their social media posts about her. During the party, they couldn’t record anything or bring their phones, but it’s OK because Swift provided each with a Polaroid with her. Polaroid photos, as it turns out, are a huge part of the ongoing theme of “1989.”

If you look on Instagram, there is a flood of photographs from fans that met the superstar, in various poses with her cats and awards and other personal items from her house. The whole thing is ingenious.

And if you think Swift has a management team running her social media release week, think again. Her publicist released a statement that the only person who has access to her social media is Swift. And Swift is using it to her advantage, creating worldwide trends on Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr such as #taylurking and #ts1989 for her album title. She is personally responding to fans on Tumblr and retweeting photos of fans on her personal Twitter to 50 million plus fans.

While many artists are cancelling shows due to low attendance, Swift is among a handful of artists that sells all of them out. Hopefully she will come through Wichita again next year to tour her new album, because that would be really good for the city.

Hater’s are going to hate, but bottom line, you should go grab Tay-Tay’s new album, and chances are, you already have it.
