Comedy with Kellerman: Regan stands out in ‘Standing Up’

Standup comedy goes through its ups and downs, and fans of it usually find a person they like and stick with them, until they get tired of them.

But one standup comedian withstands the test of time: Brian Regan.

If you’re looking for a comic that’s new on the scene with fresh ideas, this isn’t your guy. Brian Regan is Jerry Seinfeld without the notoriety or the TV show. Both are great standups and equally funny, in my uneducated opinion.

Brian Regan appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman for the first time in October of 1995 and has been on the show at least once a year ever since.

Regan brings a great mix of observational and everyday things with facial expressions that will crack you up.

If you are smart, you’ll stop reading now and search for him on YouTube, where three of his DVDs are available for free.

But, if you need more convincing, here are some samples of Regan’s work:

“They always say Albert Einstein was a genius,” Regan says in his DVD Standing Up. “Then how come when any time someone calls you that, it’s an insult? You don’t know where you parked the car? ‘Good job, Einstein.’ I don’t think we’re honoring that man properly by using his name in vain in parking lots. It’s the only time he comes up.”

The joke is so simple, yet so true, and you never really stop to think about it. Writing and reading Regan’s jokes doesn’t do him any justice. The way he contorts his voice to make even the smartest person sound like an idiot is quite amazing.

Do you know how politicians will not take questions on certain days? Regan has some ideas on that, too:

“I’m sorry. I’m not taking questions today,” the politician says.

“Oh, well, when will you be taking them? Oops, that’s a question,” the reporter almost replies.

“I wish I would’ve known that was an option when I was a kid in school,” Regan says.

“Brian, how do you find the square root of a fraction?” the teacher asks.

“I’m sorry. I’m not taking questions today,” Regan responds.

Try that one in your classes this week and see what your teacher says back to you. It probably will not go too well, but Regan gives a prime example.

Regan will make your side hurt, and these jokes are more hilarious while watching his body motions and facial expressions on stage.

Sure, the new guys that are doing standup now are funny, and I enjoy them. Kevin Hart, Louis CK and Bill Burr are all comedic geniuses in their own right. You won’t find someone as clean as Regan, though.

Regan will give the occasional “damn” or “hell,” but for the most part, it’s clean standup comedy, and he’s worth a shot.

Another reason to love Regan is that he is one of the few names that has appeared in Wichita for performances.

If you haven’t heard of him, now you have. If you haven’t given him a chance to make you die laughing, I hope you will.

Give it a shot, he won’t disappoint you. If you refuse to watch or listen to his standup then I have one thing to say to you:

“Way to go, Einstein.”
