Hundreds flocked to the Campus Activities Center Theatre at Wichita State on Thursday to enjoy a night of hypnosis and something I’ve never seen the Student Activities Council do: an R-rated show.

“The Sandman” came to hypnotize 12 members of the audience. I became lucky number 13.

Hypnosis fascinates me. A lot of people think it’s “hogwash,” but I gave it a try when I was about 17 years old at the Kansas State Fair.

I talked to these people, one of whom said he had seen “The Sandman” a dozen times. He said he was shocked at the low ticket prices.

I saw “The Sandman” in person outside, enjoying a cigarette in front of the theatre. I told him how I’ve been hypnotized before, and he told me it works faster every time you do it.

There were signs on the door that warned of the show’s graphic nature and adult humor, but nothing could have prepared me for the raunchy jokes that occurred on the inside.

“The Sandman” took the stage on time, and the music and lighting he brought with him were impressive. He called 12 people up to the stage to be hypnotized, and before I could leave my seat, they were on stage.

I have heard of people being hypnotized in their seats before, and he encouraged the audience to try it.

I went along with and did what he said and before I knew it, I was on the floor.

Yes, I fell out of my chair and onto the floor. Because I saw him before the show, he knew my name and called me up on stage.

I remember running up on stage and being put in an extra chair. After that, it gets fuzzy. I could hear people laughing, but when you’re hypnotized, you don’t care. It’s an extremely relaxing state of being. I was having fun under his hypnosis.

It got really sexual and R-rated about halfway through. He talked about favorite sexual positions and nudity.

The interesting part about hypnosis is that you only do what you’re comfortable doing. I remember him asking about sexual positions, and I just shook my head.

After you’ve been hypnotized, it’s a great feeling. The four times that I’ve been hypnotized, I slept great the night after the show, and I have fun while it’s happening. But this show wasn’t as fun as before.

Yes, there was a warning on the door about the adult subject matter. But there were no age limits on who got in the door. There should have been an age limit on who was there, because I know I saw two or three young teens.  Next time, there should be someone checking IDs of younger folks.

There were a lot of people who enjoyed the show, no doubt. There were a lot of smiling faces when I came off stage. And a lot of people even bought $20 videos to show their friends.

I have seen and been a part of shows that were way funnier than this one. I think you can have just as much fun when you take the sexual jokes and obscenities out of a performance.

I got a good night’s sleep after the show, but that’s about it.
