Shockers win CBE Hall of Fame Classic

The Wichita State Shockers defeated the Brigham Young Cougars 75-62 last week in the CBE Hall of Fame classic in Kansas City, Mo. With the win, the Shockers raised their record to 7-0 in the season.

After scoring a career-high 23 points in the game, Ron Baker was crowned the tournament MVP.

The Shockers got off to a slow start in the game, finding themselves down 19-6 with 12:35 left in the first half.

Baker said the team needs to do better in the first half of games so they don’t have to pull away in the second half, which is a trend they have had this season.

Nick Wiggins nailed a three-point shot to start WSU off on an 11-0 run that brought the Shockers into the game. Ron Baker topped off the run with a basket and free throw to bring the score to 19-21.

At the 6:32 mark, Baker landed a three-point shot to give Wichita State the lead.

After exchanging baskets, BYU took the advantage, going into half time after a three-pointer put them up 36-34.

The second half of play was a closer matchup with the teams exchanging baskets.

Fred VanVleet gave the Shockers the advantage in the second half, scoring eight unanswered points with 3:38 left in the game.

VanVleet put 12 points on the board during the game. Ten of those came in the second half.

A 9-1 run started by VanVleet with just over two minutes to go kept BYU at bay for the remainder of the game.

WSU coach Gregg Marshall said the Shockers beat a very good team that he expects to do well in the season. A team that gave the Shockers a gut-check game, he said.

“That wasn’t a pretty game, it wasn’t an easy game, they zoned us for every possession except for one the whole game,” Marshall said. “We just found a way.”

Baker said the team will learn from the challenges this game brought in order to prepare for more difficult games later in the season.

“This is a great test and we’re going to build on it and learn from it,” Baker said.
